The canine unit consists of a Sheriff's Lieutenant as Service Dog Manager and two Sheriff's deputies. The Deputies assigned to the canine unit are called upon to assist when the need arises in conducting searches for illegal materials.

  • Deputy Miller and his partner Libby, and Deputy Powers and her partner Jax, both are AKC Labrador Retrievers who search for illegal drugs. The Labrador Retriever was chosen for its intelligence, willingness to work, disposition and overall physical ability to perform police duties.
  • Both the deputy and their canine go through a training and certification process and continue to train on a regular basis in order to maintain certification.
  • Some of the other canine handling responsibilities are to conduct numerous community relations activities such as public speaking and canine demonstrations at community events and district schools throughout the year.
