The Mesa County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit is supervised by Sgt. Jeff Byrne. The Traffic Unit has several areas where deputies focus on traffic related activities. Some of the areas are speed enforcement patrols in our many school zones during the school year. Other concerns are identified traffic problems such as reports of excessive speeds in neighborhoods or areas which have a high number of traffic accident or "road rage" incidents. The Traffic Unit was created in 2009 after hearing concerns from the community about the service(s) they were missing in Mesa County.
A large focus is in the area of the detection and apprehension of drivers impaired by alcohol and/or drugs (D.U.I.). The Sheriff's Office has again applied for a grant through the LEAF Program for 2009, which assists law enforcement agencies with funding for equipment and salaries. D.U.I. checkpoints will be planned throughout the year during holidays consistent with alcohol consumption. Mobile patrols will occur during both week ends and mid week throughout the year. The Sheriff's Office will be working collectively with the Grand Junction Police Department, the Fruita Police Department, the Colorado State Patrol and others in this endeavor. Remember, the legal limit for D.U.I. is 0.08%. Don't take the risk of drinking and driving. This diligence has only one goal, to make the roads and highways of Mesa County safe for our visitors and citizens.
