    Mesa County, Colo. -- Prescription Drug Take Back event scheduled for four locations in Mesa County on Saturday, October 26, 2013.
    Icon 09-12-2013 -- Large Marijuana Bust On Interstate 70

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Two arrested following traffic stop on Interstate 70, after methamphetamine and a large amount of marijuana was located inside the vehicle. The suspects have been booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on multiple drug  related charges.

    Icon 09-11-2013 -- Interstate Interdiction Nabs Two For Meth

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Two adults from Tennessee were stopped on Interstate 70, eastbound yesterday and ultimately arrested for possession and distribution of methamphetamine. Thomas Phoenix, 59, and Jessie Moody, 28, were booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility by investigators with the Western Colorado Drug Task Force who routinely work interstate interdiction in Mesa County.

    Mesa County, Colorado — After investigation by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, it has been determined the events that occurred in this case are not criminal.  No charges will be filed in this case by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

    Mesa County, Colorado— On Tuesday August 27, at approximately 7pm , Mesa County deputies responded to a report of a child who had been bitten by the family dog in the 500 block on Ronlin St. Upon arrival deputies found the dog secured in the residence and an eight month old female and her mother went to St Mary’s hospital for treatment.

    MESA COUNTY, Colo. - Getting out to meet your neighbors and keep your community safer is the goal of National Night Out—America’s Night Out Against Crime, which is why Crime Stoppers of Mesa County and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office are hosting a free community party in Clifton on Tuesday, August 6 from 5 - 8 p.m., at Kimwood Park.

    Icon 07-29-2013 -- 2013 Fire Ban Lifted

    Mesa County, Colo.— At 12:01 a.m., on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, the Mesa County Sheriff in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management and the Mesa County Fire Chief’s Association will be removing the stage 1 fire restrictions on private and public land in Mesa County. The stage 1 fire restrictions have been in place since June 27, 2013.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Investigators, working with the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, today obtained a signed arrest warrant for David James Norman, 44, of Grand Junction, in connection with the homicide of Kathy Fortner.

    MESA COUNTY, Colo – As the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team investigation into the officer involved shooting on I70 last week continues, we are releasing the names of the two Grand Junction Police officers and four Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies who were involved.

    Icon 07-09-2013 -- Fortner Homicide Investigation Update

    Mesa County, Colo. —  On Tuesday, July 2, 2013, a car of out-of-state visitors stopped at the West entrance to the Colorado National Monument for a photo with the Park sign. Those visitors saw a lifeless adult body off the east side of the entrance road and south of Highway 340. They made a call to dispatch to report their find about 12:45 p.m.

    Icon 07-07-2013 -- Bomb Investigation

    Mesa County, Colo. — On July 7, 2013, at approximately 1442 hours, Mesa County Deputies responded to a report of bomb and bomb making materials at the E Building of Racquet Club apartments; located at 2915 Orchard Avenue.  The items were described as bottles and canisters filled with gunpowder, sealed with duct tape with an attached fuse.  The items were contained in a backpack on the south side of the building.

    Mesa County, Colo.— The Mesa County Sheriff and Bureau of Land Management are implementing county-wide fire restrictions effective at 12:01 a.m., on Thursday, June 27, 2013. All Mesa County Fire Departments are supporting the fire restrictions.

    Icon 06-17-2013 -- Armed Robbery In Clifton

    Mesa County, Colo. —  As the male clerk was ending his shift at the Loco convenience store at 573 32 Road, Clifton, just before midnight on Sunday, June 16, he was robbed. A Hispanic male suspect entered the store and approached the counter, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money from the cash register. The clerk complied and was not injured.

    Icon 06-12-2013 -- Woman Claims She Was Kidnapped, Update 1

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Investigators have determined the kidnapping incident in the north part of Grand Junction, that occurred on June 5th was not a random act. Investigators have information the adult female victim was targeted by the suspect for potential ransom that resulted in the kidnapping incident.

    Icon 06-12-2013 -- Missing Denver Man, Update 2

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Around 5 p.m. on June 11, the deceased body of Nolus Xavier Sunoon, 34 of Denver, was located by search volunteers. His body was found nearly a mile from his dirt bike, and while he had some superficial injuries that were consistent with crashing his dirt bike, there was no obvious cause of death. The Mesa County Coroner will determine cause and manner of death.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  The missing man is identified as Nolus Xavier Sunoon, 34, of Denver. Emergency personnel on scene located his dirt bike and helmet east of the Command Post, just before 2 p.m. They continue to search for Nolus in the area north of the Grand Junction Regional Airport. If anyone sees Sunoon, they should call 911 immediately.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  A 34-year-old Denver man came to Grand Junction on Saturday for a few days of dirt biking in the desert area north of the Grand Junction Regional Airport. He was expected back in Denver, by his friends, on Monday, June 10, 2013. When he became overdue, they reported him missing on Monday evening. 

    Icon 06-05-2013 -- Woman Claims She Was Kidnapped

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Last night, investigators interviewed an adult female who reported her own kidnapping. She described an incident that occurred about 8 p.m. on June 4, 2013. She was not injured during the incident. The suspect was an adult male, described as Hispanic, medium build, about 6’ tall.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  On the evening of Thursday, May 9, 2013, deputies were dispatched to John Brown Canyon, south of Gateway, Colo. A hiker reported finding a partially buried vehicle with skeletal remains inside.

    MESA COUNTY, Colo – The Western Colorado Drug Task Force, in

    partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Two

    Rivers Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT) and the 21st Judicial

    District Attorney’s Office are moving forward with dozens of arrests

    following a drug and racketeering investigation that has resulted in a

    grand jury indictment of 36 people.


    Icon 04-17-2013 -- Suspicious Incidents Reported
    (Grand Junction, CO)- The Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, and Fruita Police Department have received reports in the last couple weeks of suspicious incidents involving strangers approaching kids on their way to or from school. At this point in the investigations, none of the incidents appear to be linked, as the suspect descriptions and vehicles do not match. However, we feel these serve as good reminders to teach your children things they can do to stay safe.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Two search and rescue missions in as many days were assisted with a little known community resource—provided at no cost to the Sheriff’s Office, but being a priceless commodity. CenturyLink and a private citizen--Jean Francois “JF” Mugnier, both offer their helicopters (with pilots) to Mesa County Search & Rescue, Inc. (SAR) and the Sheriff’s Office on an as needed basis.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Yesterday about 6 p.m., Mesa County Search and Rescue members located two missing men and their dog near the Mee Canyon opening at the Colorado River. The men, and their dog, left the Knowles Canyon Trailhead parking lot on April 12, 2013, for a day hike.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Deputies and Mesa County Search and Rescue, Inc. responded to Knowles Canyon Trailhead today after getting a report of two adult men who were overdue returning home. The call came into our Regional Dispatch Center about 8:45 a.m.

    Mesa County, CO— Mesa County Commissioners and Grand Junction Council members will each honor local law enforcement and their agency Victim Advocates next week, for the National Crime Victims’ Rights week. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan’s Task Force on Victims of Crime envisioned a national commitment to a more equitable and supportive response to victims. Since then, victims’ rights initiatives and compassionate victim services have been implemented nationwide.

    Mesa County, Colorado— On Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Grand Junction Police Department, Palisade Police Department, and the Fruita Police Department will be participating in the bi-annual National Prescription Drug Take Back event for the third consecutive year.

    Mesa County, Colo. -- In reference to assertions by other Colorado sheriffs that they will not enforce new state laws concerning limitations on gun sales and ammunition magazine capacity, I have been asked to assert my position regarding enforcement of these laws.  My stance in support of the Second Amendment is clear and on record. My opinion still remains that these laws are not useful in keeping guns out of the hands of violent criminals nor will they prevent the kind of mass murder events that have emotionally driven us to this result.

    MESA COUNTY, CO – Carlos Perez-Romero, 39, was arrested and booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on March 5, 2013. He was booked on charges related to 2 pounds of methamphetamine found in a hidden compartment in the horse trailer he was pulling behind his vehicle. 

    Icon 02-26-2013 -- Update On Missing Elderly Man

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Last night Grand County Sheriff’s Office (Utah) responded to an unattended death 11 miles west of the Colorado border, above Glade Park. The death is not believed to be suspicious. The missing person investigation into Lou Schneider has been closed.

    Mesa County, Colo. —  Lou Schneider, 81-years-old, was reported missing by his family on Saturday, February 23, 2013. They believe he ate a meal at the Grand Junction Golden Corral restaurant on Highway 6 & 50 in the early evening of Saturday. 

    Icon 02-18-2013 -- Missing Loma Woman Found

    Mesa County, Colo. —  About 9:45 a.m. today the deceased body of what is believed to be Roxanne Kostka was located outside between N and O Roads and 15 and 16 Roads, in the Loma area. Information new to deputies this morning indicated Kostka wanted to harm herself. Deputies will work with the Mesa County Coroner to determine cause and manner of death, as well as, confirm identity of the body.

    Icon 02-08-2013 -- Drug Task Force Interstate Interdiction

    MESA COUNTY, CO – Jesse Smith, 31, of Dryden, New York, and his brother Schuyler Smith, 26, of Dryden, New York, were stopped early yesterday morning on Interstate 70, by a drug task force officer. After a search of the vehicle, the officer found 8 pounds of marijuana. That amount of pot has a street value of approximately $20,000.00.

    Icon 02-06-2013 -- Lottery Scam

    What is a lottery or sweepstakes scam? The latest version to effect Mesa County citizens, calls potential victims and advises them they have won the lottery, “Mega Millions” or won a new car. The scammer is convincing and confident in their information and sometimes bullies the victim into believing they already have personal and financial information. In addition, the caller requests funds to pay the taxes, fees, licensing, transportation or some other “fee” associated with collecting the car or lottery funds.

    Icon 02-06-2013 -- Overpayment Scam

    What is an over-payment scam? The latest version of the over-payment scam to effect Mesa County citizens, has primarily been through people legitimately selling items on Craigslist. The seller received a payment by check for the item(s) they are selling, but the check amount is inflated. The seller is instructed to cash the check, keep the appropriate amount and forward the remaining amount to a third party. In some cases, that third party is described as a friend, associate or moving company—all of which, “will be picking up the sale item soon.”

    Icon 02-03-2013 -- Heather Jensen Arrives In Mesa County

    Mesa County, Colorado— Heather Jensen arrived at the Mesa County Detention Facility just after 3 p.m. today, after being transported from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office jail in Fort Myers, Florida. Jensen was arrested in Florida on a Mesa County warrant for the death of her two sons. That warrant is available in a previous news release on our Newsroom website.

    Icon 02-01-2013 -- Teens For Jeans Donation Site

    Mesa County, Colorado— Starting Monday, February 4th through February 14th, the Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the local Aeropostale store to be a donation site for gently used jeans. The program, ‘Teens for Jeans’ rewards donors with an in-store discount and all donated jeans go to local homeless teens. The program is termed for the idea of teens donating to help other teens, but donations aren’t limited to who they come from. Everyone is encouraged to donate gently used jeans, for this good cause. 

    Icon 02-01-2013 -- Inmate Visitation Closed

    Mesa County, Colorado— Monday and Tuesday, February 4th and 5th, Inmate Visitation will be closed due to construction in the detention lobby. Regular business hours for all other operations will be un-interrupted, but done from the administrative lobby. Inmate visitation scheduling will be closed on Monday, with visitation appointments being accepted on Tuesday by calling the Inmate Visitation Hotline 970.244.3536.

    Mesa County, Colorado— Concealed handgun permit applications are being submitted on a grand scale these days. In 2012, CHPs averaged 90 applications per month. In January 2013, CHPs jumped to 160 applications submitted. Due to the high volume of applications and being able to process that internally, the hours of accepting CHP applications is being limited to three business days a week.

    Greg was a significant piece of the fabric of our community, his loss is a blow to us all. I will remember him for his extremely intuitive investigative skills, volunteer work with important community projects, most notably the WWII Honor Flight, and for his jovial nature. Greg and I have had a lot of fun over the years talking about the first time I met him, December 26, 1984, when he gave me my very first traffic ticket. Kris and I are thinking about Deletha and their kids today as they deal with the loss of this good man.

    The Western Colorado Auto Theft Task Force (WCATT) and Coloradans Against Auto Theft (CAAT) are teaming up the week of January 28- February 1, as part of a statewide awareness effort to put the brakes on “puffers” – a term coined by car thieves to describe a vehicle left running unattended.

    Mesa County, Colorado— On January 13, 2013, deputies and investigators were summonsed to a local hospital to investigate a suspected child abuse involving a 4-year-old, male victim. That child remains in the hospital at this time.

    Mesa County, Colorado— Sheriff's Investigators and District Attorney's staff, working with law enforcement authorities in the State of Florida, were notified today at 2:15 p.m. that Heather Jensen was arrested in North Fort Myers, Florida on a Mesa County warrant. Jensen is the mother of two young boys who died as a result of hyperthermia in November 2012.

    Grand Junction, Colo. — They are reflections from officers across our country who put themselves in harms way every day with no expectation of anything in return.  Now Western Colorado residents will have the chance to see these incredible stories during a special screening of the new movie “Heroes Behind the Badge.”  This documentary film features some of the brave men and women of law enforcement who have put their lives on the line and survived, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Already this inspiring movie is changing the way people look at the men and women of law enforcement by highlighting the unselfish acts of bravery they commit each day in the line of duty.
