The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) is a radio service authorized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and implemented at the local government level. RACES is an amateur radio service that provides radio communication for civil preparedness purposes only, during periods of local, regional or national civil emergencies. These emergencies include natural disasters such as fires, floods, tornadoes, and man-made disasters to include acts of terrorism and war. RACES operation is activated by a local government official for emergency purposes or for training.
The mission of the Mesa County RACES (MCRACES) is to provide auxiliary communications for the Mesa County Sheriff and Department of Emergency Management to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and natural disasters within Mesa County. MCRACES members make up a majority of the Mesa County Search and Rescue Communications Team and also provide Skywarn support to the National Weather Service.
