The Criminal Investigations Section is a specialized group of deputies that investigates felony crimes committed in unincorporated Mesa County and files cases with the District Attorney's Office. This unit is made up of Investigators with a combined 200+ years of law enforcement experience. On average, the Criminal Investigations Section investigates more than 650 cases a year.
The Investigations Section is divided into two areas: Property Crimes Unit and Complex Crimes Unit.
The Property Crimes Unit (PPCU)
This unit investigates several different felony crimes to include Robbery, Burglary, Auto Theft, Fraud/Forgery, Identity Theft, Theft and financial crimes involving at-risk adults. These Investigators are also a part of the grant funded BATTLE WEST Auto Theft Task Force. This task force partners with other investigators from Western Colorado to combat auto theft..
The Complex Crimes Unit (CCU)
This unit investigates Homicide, Sexual Assault, Internet Crimes Against Children, Child Abuse, all death investigations and missing persons/runaways. One of the CCU Investigators focuses on internet crimes and computer forensics. Many of the crimes in PCU and CCU utilize computer forensics to help solve the crimes.
Critical Incident Response Team
The MCSO Investigators are also on the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). This team is made up of several Investigators and Detectives from all Mesa County law enforcement agencies and the District Attorney’s Office. This team is called in to investigate critical incidents such as an Officer Involved Shooting.
MCSO Investigation team have worked on several cases that have gained national attention including: Jennifer Blagg murder investigation (2001), Paige Birgfeld murder investigation (2007), Alan Helmick murder investigation (2008), and Shane Johnson (2006 and 2008).
